Welcome to this weeks DJ2CombatStress Blog
Mix 3 – garage
It has been a tough couple of weeks personally and while I have set my heart on this cause, I had to take a step back from DJing and focus on my home life. I realised that I wasn’t in the right head space to be creative and it was more about supporting my family to get through a painful period.
Having woken up at 5am on Saturday, I knew it was time to get back to the decks. Having listened to my first few mixes (the really rubbish ones not on mixcloud) there were things I was beginning to notice during the transitions that I wasn’t happy with and spent the morning learning some new skills.
Garage is something I really got into around 15 when I used to hang around the Isle of Dogs. Pure Silk was my favourite label and watching DJ S at Bed Club in Faliraki was a huge highlight when I was 18. Fast forward a few years and garage had gone mainstream, I had watched the stars perform in Kavos, Ayia-Napa and even Yarmouth Peer.
This year I had a great reminder of my youth watching Luck and Neat along with Widerboys at Garage Nation, with relatively new addition Foor and as ever Creed dominating the main stage.
Having been mixing DnB recently, garage seems to be a lot easier…..in fact I was getting it wrong as I had too much time!!
I have been playing about with fading using using the volume controls so I feel that I am now eliminating a slight pause between the drop of the next song. Mixing in key is still causing me no end of pain and I also have noticed during the build up that two songs together can be a bit noisy, so have tried to cut the base out during the transition. As ever it is a learning journey and I always welcome your feedback!
